Lehigh University Jazz Repertory Concert – Saturday, 10/18th 8pm

10690344_10153200326793765_7699280811509477479_nLehigh University Music Department presents its annual jazz performance dedicated to Big Band music with the Lehigh University Jazz Repertory Orchestra on Saturday, October 18 at 8 pm at Baker Hall. Tickets are $15. Admission is free to Lehigh University students with ID. WDIY is the 2014-2015 Lehigh University Music Department media sponsor.

In Tribute to the Swing Era, the Lehigh University Jazz Repertory Orchestra salutes greats like Artie Shaw, Glenn Miller, Claude Thornhill, Charlie Barnet and Benny Goodman. The orchestra is dedicated to the recreation of classics, as well as the creation of new jazz, funk and Latin music. The band is composed of Lehigh University jazz faculty and studio musicians performing under the guidance of director Warfield.

A Lehigh University jazz student group will be playing in the lobby before the concert at 7:00 pm.

Director Bill Warfield is a full-time faculty member of the Lehigh University Music Department. He is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music where he won the Maynard Ferguson Scholarship, the William H. Borden Award for outstanding accomplishment in Jazz/Commercial Music, and the Carmine Caruso Award for Outstanding Trumpet Performance. Warfield has distinguished himself as a successful musician, performing with such diverse artists as Ornette Coleman, Mel Torme, David Sanborn, Lew Soloff, Mel Lewis, David Liebman and Sonny Stitt. Warfield is a successful bandleader and composer and his own band (the Bill Warfield Big Band) has performed at Birdland, The Blue Note, and The Cutting Room in New York City. Warfield was recently included in the Biographical Encyclopedia of Jazz compiled by Ira Gitler and Leonard Feather.
