Artist of the Day #20: Dave Rapoza

Attention children of the 80’s, or really anyone who is still part child, today’s artist is for you. Dave Rapoza is a little different from most of the artists I have discussed on here, but isn’t that what art is all about? Starting with loose sketches Rapoza finishes these stunningly detailed images through Photoshop. He works as illustrator and has completed covers and projects for several magazines and publications, but when it comes to what he is very passionate about and interested in, it’s mostly fictional characters from comic books, cartoons, and movies.

There are two major things about this artist I very much like. First of all, he is almost entirely self-taught. He did not attend some fancy school where they wasted half their time talking about what to wear to an art opening. He sat at his desk until he could make it work. He jokes on his site that he attended the University of Dave Rapoza and majored in being handsome, and I think we could all learn from that and just try to learn from ourselves a little more often.

The other major thing that I like about him is that he is very quick to share his process with others. So many artists keep their ideas a secret like it’s the Holy Grail, and I think more often than not that just causes them to not grow and hold onto those same old ideas for way too long. Now maybe its just because I was named after the very anti-patent Ben Franklin, but I think ideas are meant to be shared so that others can do great things with them too. We’re all in this messed up world together, so let’s share and look at cool pictures of Ninja Turtles together and be happy. Check out this video of Rapoza completing an awesome image of a zombie cheerleader:
