New Ideas for Community Experience

ArtsLehigh is cooking up new ideas to help newly hired faculty and staff make some great connections to our local community through the arts and culture. The idea comes from the director’s personally (and very fond) memory of her transition to the Lehigh Valley, Lehigh University and South Bethlehem when she moved from Ohio six years ago.

The first idea was inspired by a program we read about from Dublin Ireland’s Visitor’s Blog, The Irish Fireside called, “Free Pint with a Local.”  For the sake of not getting into complicated liquor license issues with the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, we’d like to see if it would work around a cup of coffee. Since the Southside has many coffee shops to visit, we’d like to see first if we can recruit some willing locals to meet our new Faculty and Staff members for a cup of coffee and some friendly conversation. Times and locations are as flexible as volunteers would like it to be. If you are willing to offer some of your time and are willing to play with our little experiment, please consider contacting us by email ArtsLehigh@lehigh.edu Be a part of the LiveLocal Southside Bethlehem movement – welcome our new members of the Lehigh University family.

The second idea was a natural progression of our freshmen prelusion program, ArtsAlive. ArtsAlive Freshmen participants come to campus early to enjoy a variety of arts making experiences while acclimating to South Bethlehem. We keep the enrollment to this program small to ensure a great experience for the students. Realizing we can reach more students, we’re going to try a similar program for students who’ve already been at Lehigh for at least one year, and are interested in coming back to campus two days early to have a visceral learning experience of South Bethlehem arts and culture. We have lots of activity ideas to try out. For now, we pitch this idea to see if students, faculty or staff would like to be a part of this other experiment.

Here’s more of a tangible idea of what we’re thinking so far in terms of schedule:

Saturday (Aug 27):
11-11:30 – Tour of Zoellner Arts Center; including art galleries
11:30-12:30pm – lunch at ArtsLehigh
12:45 – historic walking tour of the Steel Site photography allowed
2:00 – Bethlehem Film at Steelstacks
2:45 – Loop bus
3:00 pm Historic Bethlehem Walking Tour
TBD Dinner at local restaurant (time for changing clothes)
6:00pm – Concert: Mr Ho’s Orchestrotica at SteelStacks

Sunday (Aug 28):
10:30 am yoga level 1 at Yoga Loft followed by walk along Greenway to
Lunch at MachPiccu Peruvian Restaurant on 4th and Williams Street
2:30 Building America in Bethlehem film at TBD location.
Rest of evening on your own.

We would charge $150 to cover food and all admission fees. Our group is limited to 15 – and we expect competition for this program. We’ll cross that bridge if and when we need to.

In the meantime, we’re really excited about these ideas. Our director really identifies with Julie from the Love Boat. She’s always humming the theme song from the show when our staff starts brainstorming ideas.
